Own a piece of the golden age of precision science.

This is an authentic Leeds & Northrup Precision Potentiometer, Catalog No. 7651 — built in Philadelphia by the most respected name in American precision measurement. Leeds & Northrup didn't make instruments for the masses; they made the instruments that calibrated other instruments. Their apparatus was the working tool of standards laboratories, universities, and metallurgical works for generations.

A potentiometer like this one was no ordinary meter. It measured voltage by an elegant null-balance method — comparing an unknown voltage against a known reference so precisely that it could determine temperatures, calibrate other instruments, and measure with an accuracy ordinary meters could never touch. This was the instrument scientists reached for when an ordinary one simply wasn't good enough.

Restored by hand, the right way:

  • Metal faceplate carefully cleaned and brought back to proper presentation, preserving every engraved marking
  • Every metal contact button hand-polished individually — slow, meticulous work that rewards close inspection
  • Control knobs cleaned and detailed; main dial cleaned and lubricated for a smooth, weighted, precise feel
  • Wooden case stripped completely to bare wood, then refinished by hand in six hand-rubbed coats of a traditional French wood finish — layered in the old manner for a deep, warm luster that cannot be faked

A one-of-a-kind gift or display piece. With its handsome wood case, brass-and-steel detailing, and the quiet authority of a genuine scientific instrument, this piece makes a stunning conversation starter on any shelf, desk, mantel, library, or studio. For the collector, the scientist, the engineer, the history lover, or anyone who appreciates beautifully made objects from a vanished era — it's the gift no one else will think to give.

Includes a custom provenance document detailing the instrument's history and restoration — ready to display or frame alongside the piece.

Instruments like this rarely surface in this condition. When it's gone, it's gone.

Offered as a restored display piece and collector's artifact of scientific heritage.
